Ölands is a Swedish landrace wheat that has been grown on the second largest island in the Baltic Sea for millennia. Resurgent interest in the wheat in recent decades begun when Swedish researcher Hans Larsson accessed various spelt lines from the Nordic Genebank. Among his selections was a free-threshing bread wheat rather than a spelt. The wheat appealed to Hans for its genetics and historical context and was eventually made available to Artisan bakers in Sweden and Denmark. They responded favourably to its flavour, digestion and nutrition profile, and it has since become a key wheat in Scandinavian bread culture. Tuerong Farm imported several lines through quarantine in 2019, collected from farmer Anders Borgen, baker Louise Bannon and Nordgen. In 2024 we finally grew enough to start milling and baking, and learning about this wonderful European landrace. It behaves more like spelt than bread wheat, with a delicate arc of fermentation and other attributes we look forward to learning more about in our own bakery.
